Strategy #6 • SIMPLIFY FAST-FINISHER ACTIVITIES.

All your students do not work at the same pace. It’s a fact, and it can be a pain because we always need to come up with fast-finisher activities for those students who work at a faster pace. Even more stuff to prep! Ugh! A lot of the teachers I know want these activities to be a valuable use of time, but we also don’t want to make the activities so good that students rush (and undoubtedly make silly errors) so they can work on a super-fun fast-finisher project.

Like a lot of things in teaching, fast-finisher activities can be a balancing act that feels impossible to win.

I am kind of embarrassed to admit this, but I already told you about my poop rug, so what do I really have to lose? I used to spend hours and hours every single week making photocopies of math-fact printables for my fast finishers. I can actually remember being at the school for my son’s orchestra concert, running to the copy room between performances to add more paper to the copier. Reams and reams of paper later and all I had were a few papercuts, an annoyed husband, and a boring activity for my math fast finishers. What was I thinking?

After trying just about everything, I came to the realization that once again, simplicity is the answer! (It almost always is. Why can’t I remember that when I am making everything complicated?)
